Birth control pills are statistically 99% effective. They really can prevent pregnancy, otherwise women wouldn't use them all the time. If you're 100% against becoming pregnant, the only 100% effective way to NOT get pregnant is to abstain from sex. If you're willing to deal with the less than 1% chance of becoming pregnant, birth control pills are typically a very safe route to take. Best wishes!

They're very very effective-around 99% if taken properly. Properly, in this case means that you take them at the same time each day, that you're not using other medications like St John's Wort or antibiotics that may lower the effectiveness, that you're not skipping or missing pills, and that you're not going more than seven days between packs, and if you do any of those things, that you use a backup method of contraception like condoms or spermicide. "Typical use" which means things like taking pills late one day, makes them abou 92% effective.

They work in three ways-they affect certain hormones in your body, preventing ovulation, and basically putting your ovaries to sleep for a while-without an egg to fertilize you can't get pregnant. They also make the lining of the uterus thinner, which means that it's not a good place for a fertilized egg to implant and grow, and they thicken the mucous at the cervix making it much harder for sperm to get through and try to fertilize the egg.

They can be very effective for some, and not good for others and of cause it can depend on the type of pill that is taken. It can be only as effective as the person remembering to take it too. These days there a longer lasting alternatives, like the injections available as well as implants.
As far as I am concerned, its certainly a better alternative than taking nothing and finding yourself with an unwanted pregnancy. If you want to know more about it go to your family GP or a Clinic and talk about your choices with them.

if taken correctly, ie, the same exact time every day, birth control pilss have a "failure rate of less than 1% per year when used without missing any pills. the typical failure rate of large numbers of pill users is 5% per year when women who miss pills are included." that's from the pill insert to my ortho tricyclen. however i'm sure it varies from brand to brand and type of birth control. some women who take it just end up being in that 1% while otehrs don't have any problems at all! it just depends.

I've heard that nothing can totally prevent pregnancy. They say the pill is 99.9% sure. I believe that means one woman in a thousand is going to get pregnant. I would use the pill and condoms to prevent diseases and pregnancy and share the responsibility.
