iTunes is an all-in-one solution. It's designed to work seamlessly with the iTunes Store (the largest online music store out there, and one of the few that offers a format besides the outdated and muddy-sounding MP3 format), your CD collection (register an account with the iTunes store and it'll even download your album artwork for free, in addition to grabbing the track data), your computer, and your iPod. WMP does not work directly with any online music store or portable digital music players. It's just designed to work with your CD collection, your computer (well, now it's probably designed to work with the Zune). There are music players that are able to lift playlist data from WMP so you can use them for playback, but that's a 3rd Party application making use of the original WMP data, not WMP providing more native functionality.
Both players will allow you to import tracks from outside sources, but they won't do any of the legwork for you. You'll need to track them down, download them, sort them, and then Import them into either iTunes or WMP. Only then will either player actually care about the tracks.
