The drive belt broke; you can DYI replace for about ten bucks.

It would depend on the make and model of the dryer in question as to what the noise is. It could be rollers on the rear bulkhead that support the drum as it turns having bad bearings or broken rubber tires on them, or it could be a couple of teflon slides on the front panel that supports the front of the drum, (in other models), that are worn out and allowing the drum to ride on the steel supports, metal to metal. The poor drying could be a result of many different problems also. If you'd care to email me with even the brand name of the unit, I might be able to narrow it down.

Check the vent louvers and the vent tube. If it is clogged or blocked, it will not allow the air in the dryer to "purge" thru the vent line.

the most likely problem is the heating element is probably burnt in-two. you will need to remove the back of drier . then take your
make, model # to a dealer and get a new part there will be instructions on how to do this with the new part

check to see if your lint trap is plugged up.
