Strike the ball below center to put backspin on it. Make sure your cue is chalked up and that your stroke is clean, otherwise you'll have a tendency to miscue on this shot. Just slightly below center will make the cue ball stop after contact with the object ball; a little lower will cause backspin.

there are 4 basic types of english. top- where the que ball follows the target ball forward. back english- is where you hit the bottom of the que ball and very quickly pull the stick back so you dont follow through, ( or you'll make the ball jump right off the table) and cause the que ball to come back after hitting the target ball, or do whats called a stop shot. Left and right are pretty self explanitory lol. If you're old enough to go out to a bar that's a great place to learn as long as you're around the right kinds of people. Have fun be safe.

Keep a good, scuffed up, round head on the cuetip. Chalk a lot so it doesn't slip, and keep the entire cuestick level with the tabletop. Hit the ball firmly and follow through, below the centerline of the ball. If you have a good tip, you can successfully hit the ball well below that centerline and get great traction. Key s to follow through. It will rarely work if you punch it.

If you're a starter this is pretty hard. So here's what you do. Visualize the ball in a quadrant. That's right. In your vision, cut the ball in a cross. Then strike the ball on the middle of the bottom half. With the correct angle of your stick against the ball you should be able to do it.
