We have had so many hamsters that I think I can safely answer this question.
Every single one of them is different and they have personalities of their own.
Some are so friendly and so - well-"intelligent" that they can understand language. In this context, they trust you and get you to understand to give them the things they need and food they want.
In reward, they are friendly and allow you to handle them. They learned to trust you enough.
As for the others, - they can be so inflexible and unable to even understand what they want. They bite and are scared of the sight of people and their ball and will be so traumatized by the sheer thought of being handled by you.
As these ones grow up, they learn dimly that your face gives them food and water everyday but still dont like you to hold them.
Sorry.
The answer to your question therefore, is yes, SOME dont want to be handled. It is probably their innate survival nature. When animals are too tame, they lose their edge to fend for themselves in the animal world.
The lesson - never handle a hamster who you are unfamiliar with and do not presume that all hamsters are lovable and tame. They can immediately dig their teeth into your fingers and palms and give you a cut.

No. At least not in my experience, although some seem to like it more than others. One hamster I had even used to go to sleep in my lap. If she hated being handled so much, I’m not sure how she could have calmed down enough to do that.

No, I have had lots of hamsters. I even got them a little ball (at the pet store) I could put one in and they could go all over the place. It was big enough that it wouldn't get stuck under something. he had and so did I.

No it is not true. They love to play. My daughter takes hers out for "walks" in the summer. She just let's him run around in the grass while she watches him. He loves those little "helicopter" seeds fallen from the tree. He totally chews all the outer stuff off and stuffs his cheeks with the seed. He looks so funny. But no, she plays all the time with him. And I think he likes to play.
