Where to begin?!
Boston, an incredibly beautiful city and capital of Massachusetts. It's fun and young with probably 100 colleges, universities and trade schools in the area.
Start with a "duck tour," traveling on an amphibious vehicle which gives you an overview of the city on land and then drops into the Charles River for a cruise. This will help you decide what you might want to come back and see later. You can get the ducks at The Prudential Center (great shopping area) or The Museum of Science (great science museum).
You don't need a car in the city- in fact, it's a hindrance. You can walk or take the "T," a fast, relatively inexpensive rail system that will take you pretty much anywhere you want to go.
Check out the Boston Common and The Public Garden with the Swan Boats. The exterior of the "Cheers" bar is here- where everybody knows your name.
Don't miss Fanueil Hall Market Place, down by the Harbor, with food and shops galore and right across the street from The New England Aquarium, one of the best! If you've got bucks, I'd stay down there- the Longwharf Marriott. If you've got bucks for a good meal, go to The Chart House on the wharf. Legal Seafood started in Boston and is also very good. And Durgen Park, a family restaurant in Fanueil Hall, is an institution in itself!
Notice the red brick or painted lines running along the street - this is the Freedom Trail, which connects all the historical sights in Boston, including the USS Constitution, out in the Charlestown Navy Yard. You might want to walk the Freedom Trail, but if not, the Duck will pass most of these sights.
Depending on your timing, you might catch a hockey or basketball game or concert at the Fleet Center. There's also The Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Head across the Charles on the Red Line into Cambridge, home of Harvard and MIT. Cambridge is a fun, funky town with lots of neat shops and restaurants!
Boston accomodations can be easily Googled and Yahooed, I'm sure- so this would be dependent on your budget. I'd try to stay in The Boston Common area or the Fanueil Hall area- that's where most of the tourist attractions are. If the prices are a little high, I've had success staying in Dedham ,Danvers, Revere, and Natick- nearby suburbs.
Now, besides Boston, you have Cape Cod, but I don't really know how much the teenagers will have to do there- unless they really want to spend lots of time at the beach.
A nice day trip from Boston is Salem, home of The Salem Witch Trials. Go to The Witch Museum, head down to Pickering Wharf for shopping and lunch (I love Victoria Station) and if time permits, travel up the road for a tour of The House of Seven Gables, a really neat place.
If you want to do a little more driving, head up the coast from here through the beautiful town of Marblehead into Gloucester, where the movie "The Perfect Storm" was filmed and to Rockport, a charming little fishing village. Hard to get a bad fish meal in any of these places! You can also go whale watching in either Gloucester or Salem- great fun!
I really could go on all day. I do admit to a bit of favoritism when it comes to these areas- I'm a tour director who often takes groups here, and I went to school in Boston- can't beat it!
Enjoy!
