If you just feel it coming on - that tingle - put some ice on it. Do it right away - that may stop the eruption. Ice it every ten minutes for an hour. Oranges (or any other acidic food) is a bad idea because they can actually cause a cold sore eruption. Do NOT take aspirin if you are under 18 - cold sores are a form of the herpes virus, same as chicken pox, and aspirin can react with that virus in young people to cause a rare but dangerous condition called Reyes Syndrome. If it is painful, try taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead.

I've heard that icing it at the first sign is the best way to get rid of it. Be sure not to apply the ice directly, but to wrap it in a baggie or washcloth first.

Use Iodine & or tea tree oil. These will help dry it out & stop it. I've suffered with these since childhood these remidies are all I've ever had to use.

Apparently, you can put a dampened aspirin on it & it's supposed to stop it from getting any worse. I would also take a couple as well so that you body can fight it from the inside as well.
