A relatively common cause of high iron is the disorder known as hemochromatosis. This is one of the most common genetic disorders and many people do not even know that they have it. Avoiding foods that are high in iron content is important, such as liver, baked beans, clams, mussels, sesame seeds, or cashews.

Removing excess iron from the blood is actually done most efficiently by donating blood but there are other medical treatments to lower iron but they do carry more risks than do phlebotomy. These include taking lactoferrin or desferoxamine.
