I only went back to get a test once, but that was after 6 months. My sperm count was zero. I continued using condoms for about a year after getting my vasectomy.

Normally the doctor advises that you should take precautions for the length of time it takes to get 2 clear results from samples sent away after 1 month and then 2 months. If both samples are negative i.e. no sperm present, then you can take it you are sterile and it's safe to have unprotected sex with your partner without fear of pregnancy!

Two months should do it. Have a test taken 6-8 weeks after the operation to make sure.

I just had my vasectomy about 2 weeks ago. My doctor gave me the following instructions: after he/she clears you to have sex again then you must use protection (there's still live sperm left on the penile side of the incision). After you have had 15 ejaculations then you should test 2 separate ejaculations to see what the sprem count is. When they both come back negative, then you are free to have sex without worrying about pregnancy.

When I had mine, we had to ejaculate 15 times, then take a sample to be tested.

I know your doc would have told you that. Not only, you have to bring a specimen to him, to make sure there's none 'swimming'.
