To be brief:
It provides a natural tomography of the earth's interior.
(1)It reveals the configuration of earth's interior in the form of layers of density contrast or major structurtal discontinuities or mineral transformation.
(2)The focus of the seismic event and the rupture mechanism or in simple meaning strain release mechanism can be estimated.
In case of seismic waves due to nuclear detonation estimation under (2) is more precise because of precise information of coordinates and time of the event.

I'd check out usgs.gov website---they have much information on earthquakes, seismic waves, etc
