Dexterity is the ability to move your fingers and hands in such a manner so as to be able to do precision operations and tasks. Typing on a keyboard requires a fair amount of dexterity while driving a nail with a hammer does not require nearly as much. Driving the nail with a hammer requires more hand, eye coordination. Doing fine sewing work requires a good amount of dexterity. Hope this helps.

The word dexterity come from the Latin word dexter, meaning the right hand. It has come to mean skillful with the hands.
The opposite, the word gauche meaning clumsy and awkward comes from the French for left.
on the other hand (no pun intended!) the word 'sinister' comes from the Latin for left hand!

Being good with the hands, especially with intricate work.

Latin "dexter", "right" (not left).

In a right-handed world, left-handers were (and still are) made to look clumsy, and were shunned by others in less enlightened times.

The Latin for "left" is "sinister".
