Are you referring to "Stockholm Syndrome"

It describes "the behavior of kidnap victims who, over time, become sympathetic to their captors. The name derives from a 1973 hostage incident in Stockholm, Sweden. At the end of six days of captivity in a bank, several kidnap victims actually resisted rescue attempts, and afterwards refused to testify against their captors".

Oh, the answer is right on the tip of my tongue! Patty Hearst was a good example of it.. but it escapes me at the moment. Major brain cramp! ( Patty Hearst..kidnapped ..70's or 60's..in line to inherit the Hearst publishing fortune.. She ended up helping in a bank robbery before rescued)
