Because UK had issued security guarantees to Poland... and then Germany invaded Poland, so hence our legal commitment to declare war on Germany.

The European section of WWII began with the German invasion of Danzig, Poland on September the 1st 1939. The reason the United Kingdom declared War against Germany was because the Germans refused to leave Poland and agree to a ceasefire, regardless of urgence of many of other states.
The French decided not to act for approx 7 hrs and slowly over the next 48hrs the rest of the Commonwealth and the Empire followed.
The World War as such did not start until 1941 when the US, Japan became involved.

1939 and Germany declared war in all directions. It appeared that although the Germans had a master race in mind, Churchill didn't want to be speaking German. It was almost universally decided that if the Germans went through Poland to get to France then a state of war would be declared between these countries. Britain took part under Churchill to enforce fareness in the world.

Among other treaties, England had Defense Pacts with Checoslovaquia and Poland.
Due that Hitler offered that if given the Sudets in Checoslovaquia, these would be his last demands in Europe, and peace would be secured, England, Germany,France and Italy agreed in Munich to let Hitler have the Sudets, in a last hope for peace.
Nontheless, a short time later Hitler invaded Poland on september 1st. 1939, England complying with the Pact with Poland, asked Germany on september 3rd. to abandon Poland or :
"England and Germany would be in a state of war".
Germany did not abandon Poland.
World War II had started.

Initially it was a close call as to whether we would JOIN WITH Germany, then we tried to stay neutral; Neville Chamberlain (the PM of the time), believed he had a treaty with Nazi Germany that we would remain neutral as long as none of the countries we were allied with, were attacked. One of those Countries that we had a treaty with (one of our allies), was Poland. As soon as Chamberlain arrived home with his treaty, Hitler broke it and we were at War.
Fascists did not just exist n Germany and it was them that wanted to extinguish communism (pretty much as now when you think about it).
It has been said that the only reason that the western world rose AGAINST Hitler's Nazi Germany, rather than WITH it was because he was too impatient and wanted to speed along what was going to happen anyway! That and his violent persecution of Jews was pretty much the only reason why we were not sided WITH them!

Great Britain had, already, guaranteed, to the Government of Poland, that, - should Germany "INCUR", into POLISH territory, - it was Great Britain's "SWORN DUTY", to come to their aid, in fighting such an invasion, - though, the words "SWORN DUTY" were never USED, as far as I know! That is why, - in the audio recording of the speech, by the Prime Minister, of the day, - Neville Chamberlain, - the man referred to the "UNDERTAKING", that had been delivered, two days, earlier, BY Great Britain, TO the Germans, - which the Germans IGNORED, - prompting the PM, to declare, that "NO SUCH UNDERTAKING HAS BEEN RECEIVED, - CONSEQUENTLY, - THIS COUNTRY IS AT WAR, WITH GERMANY!" The REST is HISTORY!

Britain actually declared war on Germany. It was over the invasion of Poland. Hitler was given an ultimatum but ignored it. The famous "I have in my hand a piece of parer..." speech

it was nothing to do with communism as the nazis were a fascist state. britain had pledged to help the other countries threatened by hitler, when he invaded poland he also showed his intent to invade france and belgium, and as the british were in alliance with these countries he declared war on us and we declared war on him.
