Agreed, the best way is to hire the best for the job and this stimulates people to try harder. As long as you "DO" Hire the best and not base it on race or sex.

It dosen't work both ways. I don't really support affirmative action but its purpose is to make up for historical discrimination and to try to eventually put the minority that was discriminated against in the past in the same economic position that it would have achieved had such discrimination not occured. Thus, it does not apply to whites in industries in which they are a minority because there was no historical discrimination against them in these industries. If fact, historically just the opposite is true in the industries that you mention, sports, government work and music. In these fields blacks were very much discriminated against for 50-60 years. It is a shame however that young white people who had nothing to do with past discrimination are themselves discriminated against to make up for the sins of their ancestors but it is thought that this will accellorate black economic advancement for the betterment of the country as a whole.

I don't know about those other businesses but the USPS is very "diversity" aware. The Post Office has had a long history of hiring based upon ability rather than anything else. I think if you check the federal register or USPS.com you'll find that USPS is 100% in compliance. Of course this is only as a result of years of working on the problem. ;-)

No it doesn't, in fact Affirmative Action only requires a certain amount of minorities, not a balenced ratio of all races and genders. White males do not benifit from Affirmative Action and in fact are hindered by it. My buddy was trying to be a police officer and had graduated from the acadamy in the top twenty, yet was one of the last to get a police job because all the women, blacks, asians, mexicans got preference.

I find this a little "racey", but affirmative action is to protect minorities. Look up definition.
