If you have work experience but have not yet gotten that first big break, either into the company or the field of business that you really want to be in, an MBA from one of the top MBA schools can help pave the way for you. For example, some companies actively recruit MBA's into Summer programs (in between their first and second years), and then hire primarily from the pool of people they liked over the Summer.

An MBA from a less highly ranked program may not open as many doors, but it may still be of use to you in landing your first big job.

After you get in, it's up to what you do on the job. For promotion or subsequent moves to new jobs, that will tend to weigh more heavily.

But if you are fortunate enough to be working where you want to work, and you have a future there, then the MBA may not do as much for you.

The one intangible benefit of going for an MBA is the networking you can do while you are there. You will meet professors, students, guest lecturers from industry, and so forth. This may turn out to be of help, especially early in your career.
