I believe the Nationwide debit card is a Visa card. Take a look on the Visa website http://www.visaeurope.com/personal/findacashmachine/main.jsp to see what countries will accept Visa cards in their ATM's. Similarly, the Mastercard website http://www.mastercard.com/uk/cardholderservices/index.html tells you where the Mastercard accepting ATM's are. If the ATM's accept these cards, the merchants are likely to accept these cards (if they are geared to take card payments).

Look for Cirrus and PLUS markings on the back of your card. As far as I know, these indicate that the cards can be used internationally to draw cash from machines there. I've used mine with those markings in Europe and the United States.
