If it is over half a quart overfull you risk blowing the seals out of your transmission. Especially the front seal that is located in your front pump. The pressure will be too great and blow out the seal. Then you have to take out the transmission and re-seal it. Take it to a transmission shop. Most of them have a vacula tube they can stick down your filler tube hole and suck out some of the fluid. Or if you want to disconnect the return coolant line from your transmission and start it up for a couple of seconds. Be sure to have a catch can of some sort below because that fluid will start pissing out of there like a russian race horse. Hope this helped you out.

RE:
Why not overfill transmission fluid?
My car's transmission fluid says "do not overfill". I'm curious, what's so bad about overfilling? Would it damage something or just make a mess?

it will do both.you have a chance of blowing a seal or gasket and overfilling makes the oil to foam and cause your tranny to slip.so they dont write it on the stick for nothing.its better to be a little low then too full.as long as its not too low.

Overfilling creates pressure in the container or sump which has been overfilled.
Because of the parts moving in the oil causing turbulence and heat generated by friction, there has to be enough space for the oil to expand, otherwise it causes pressure and excessive heat , for example too much grease in the wheelbearing caps , and problems like blowing out seals , and messing.
Oil would also leak out of places like the filler caps and other places where the oil is not normally supposed to reach.

Overspill from over filling fluid can make a mess and also become a fire hazard under your hood. Transmission fluid is flamable.

it damages by the fact that too much fluid tends to bubble and air bubbles and foam flowin thru the transmission parts is not good

Overfilling will increase pressure enough to 'blow' the seals, leaving oil on the floor.
