In my opinion, I believe that everyone as thought of what it would be like without them here. Not nessarily taking their life, but how things would be different if they weren't in the picture.

I am not a real believer in "normal" --whether I am normal but I am not a carefree person and to my knowledge I have never wished my life was over and I have never considered suicide. I love life and it's challenges.

You must differentiate between those who contemplate suicide as a means of crying out for help and those who contemplate suicide as truly the best option...even an epiphany of sorts.

Those who are crying out inwardly form the bulk of what we call "suicide GESTURES". They take a bunch of pills, then call someone and tell them they did so.

Those who have had a shift in paradigm and truly believe that death is the answer make up the bulk of what we call "suicide ATTEMPTS"

Sadly, many of those who drive themselves to making a gesture are too efficient for their own good, and they end up dead, so they are considered as suicidal, not differentiated from the person who was 100% determined to kill themself.

Of course, with these sad folks, there are many who are inefficient, so they fail in their attempt to kill themself, and are often misdiagnosed and mistreated as a suicide gesture.

We must always assume that someone who verbalizes suicidal ideations has plans to attempt suicide, until deeper therapy can assure us that this was a transient episode that can be controlled with therapy and medication (not to mention spiritual discipline).

Those who become seriously suicidal are often people who have been under mental health therapy for some time.

Outwardly, these patients may seem to be responding well, and those around them will ease off in their observations of them.

If the mentally ill cause us no distractions, then we largely ignore them.

But inside the mind and heart of these patients, an insidious process takes place, where every day they become more convinced that the very pills that make the world consider them "healed" are the same pills that are leaving them empty inside.

This realization, taken to the extreme, is a common factor in the conscious decision of someone to truly attempt to commit suicide.

I think anyone could have been suicidal at one time or another in their life.

However, I think, a suicidal person might try to act cheerful or carefree but I don't think anyone close to them would be fooled by it. They might not know a person is suicidal but would know something is wrong.

Not necessarily. They're good at managing their interaction with the world--that's what makes them normal. (Unless you're talking about the under 25 age group. Those people are nuerotic.)

A word pops up while reading your query, that is, 'escapist'. I don't know why some people tend to think so sometime, it might be one of our inexplicable instincts. Some professional psychologists, please help this asker and me clarify the matter, I mean from some present advanced research studies internationally. Thanks.

~I believe everyone has thought about it at one point in their lives. I doubt they imagined the whole process in their minds, just fleeting thoughts and what would it be like if I weren't here?~

It's the easiest way to get away with life. There is no competition on your way to heaven or hell. So why not?
