It's just an age-old cultural stereotype, just like the Germans think the British are all incredibly polite and drink tea all the time. That's all. I don't think anyone really believes it.

Don't get British mixed up with English, Scottish, Welsh etc. I can personally say as a Scotsman I find German people really funny. The movie "Goodbye Lenin" was one of the funniest i've watched in many years. Certainly the best foreign black comedy i'd ever seen. I don't think the English would feel the same, but can't speak for them.

Hold a moment, here is an English dude here:
"Well,id just like to say on behalf of British (read "Sun reader") people who remember,we were not fukkin laughing when the jolly old Germans, bombed the British isles and killed thousands of people,it might be a long time ago,but does that make it ok? And like my old grandad used to say...."Never trust a jerry"

EXACTLY. I was born in Germany and lived there for nearly 15 years and I laughed a lot unsurprisingly. After moving to England I got asked a lot why Germans appeared to have no senses of humour which seemed like a rather dumb question to me. It is that their sense of humour is different - just like that of any other country. I guess that British sarcasm somewhat clashes with the very dry German wit which is why it appears as though they don't find each other very funny. The reason as to why different countries have different types of humour I think boils down to the way language is constructed.

But I'm just musing.

I think people generally all have a different sense of humour. Humour and what is deemed as funny differs from person to person however i do feel in every society there is a limit to which subjects can be ventured into let alone humerously and this comes down to many factors, religion, culture etc

Thanks for the question - nice one!

Fools laugh at everything but the Wise laugh only at real joke. Fools have every good reason to think that the Wise has no sense of humour.

There is a difference in the two languages - English is very informal and German is more formal. My German friends seem to worry more that they say or do things properly. Perhaps that is why they seem more serious.

Have you heard of the fabulous Helge Schneider and Stefan Raab in TV Total, this is humour at its best.

I'm in Germany studying abroad and I laugh a lot here. I hope one day I will be able to live here.

I'm sure that they do have a sense of humour, I remember my father telling me that a German Officer said to him, "You have the americans, we have the Italians!"
