well for a start they didn't start from scratch, they took over the green stamp shops. These shops didn't take money but green stamps, which shops and garages gave out, rather like loyalty card points today. These were then exchanged for goods.
Argos took over and gradually you could pay half with stamps and half with money, the stamps gradually disappeared and Argos grew into what it is today it is today
