Has anyone done papers on a BA in Social Work or is a Social Worker? I am wanting to ask, what would be the advantages of being a Counsellor and listening to people and their problems all day everyday? I have wanted to be a Counsellor for many years but have recently been put off by family telling me it is a negative environment to be.....Please help.

Firstly, you have wanted to be a counsellor for many years. Ask yourself if you are the kind of person who follows their intuition.

The satisfaction comes from being a facilitator of beneficial change, knowing that you are a helper and knowing you contribute to people creating more happiness & less fear in their lives. It is a "giving" profession and what you give is of more-lasting worth than money or things. IMO.

As for negative environment, of course there is a lot of negative energy from some clients. That is why they come for help! :-)) Question is, is your positive energy (when trained) stronger? How are you psychically or spiritually? If you are very absorbative of others' energies, it may not be the place for you to be. If you can be, or at least believe that you can learn to be, empathic without being entangled, it may well be just right for you. It is love's work. If you're up for it.

I currently hold a Masters in Counseling Psychology and am certified as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor. I've been doing it for about 10 years. I think it is rewarding and interesting to listen to people and suggest things that may help their situation. It can be draining to see the same person over and over but that one person who you actually "help" makes it all worth while. Plus, if you look at the work force and all the businesses and factories closing down, there will always be a need for drug and mental health counselors. As long as there are human beings, drugs, and problems, counselors will be there too!

~It would definitely be a learning experience. You identify self destructive patterns and can help a person deal with that, it could change their entire lives for the better. How rewarding that would be.~
