This is one of my favorite stories. I think the most important value at least to me was that we need to let go of all our hurts, to allow them to empower us. If we cannot embrace our pain, we pass it on to our children unknowingly. Then they have a struggle from which has no origin. Remember the one mother who seemed so sheltering, she made her child fearful of taking risks. The daughter never understood why she felt that way. The mother had transferred her fear to her daughter. Truth was she lost her other children so was overprotective.

Culturally and individually, we pass our hurts, anger, intolerance, and frustration to the next generation. We have many angry african american who hold on to the travesty done to their parents and grandparent. We must be very careful how we treat others because many generations will pay for our injustices.
