"The Untouchables" is in my opinion De Palma's greatest work, with his other masterpiece, namely "Scarface", coming a very close second. In "Scarface" the focus is on a paranoid and self-destructive gangster who rises to meteoric heights and then falls; in "The Untouchables" the focus is on a very honest man with a noble mission, Elliot Ness (Kostner), who is prepared to do anything to clean Chicago from the corruption and mayhem caused by the notorious gangster Al Capone (De Niro). His quest is really tough, as his opponent is determined and powerful, but he has the help of three invaluable partners: Malone (Connery), a no-nonsense experienced cop, Wallace (Martin Smith), an accountant who will try to help bring tax charges against Capone, and Stone (Garcia), a great shooter.
As I noted before the film is brilliantly directed, with some scenes such as the one with the baseball bat, or the one with the baby in the train station, having become classic. The acting is superb, and while Connery was the one who received his well-deserved Oscar, Kostner and De Niro made Oscar-class performances too.
Although belonging to a typical genre, this film certainly stands out.

This movie is a classic although also a very stylised pastiche of crime movies in general. It focuses on the struggle of treasury agent Eliot Ness who has been assigned to job of working with the Chicago Police Department to help them put gangster Al Capone behind bars where he belongs. Ness is a straight down the line, honest man with principles, many of which he has to temporarily go against to progress in his pursuit of this man. I would thoroughly reccommend this film to anyone. Yes, there are violent moments, but its nothing compared to what 1930's Chicago must have really been like. There are some beautiful set pieces notably the scene as Ness waits at the train station to meet and apprehend a bookmaker associate of Capone's. Lifted from Sergei Eisenstein's movie 'Battleship Potemkin' it perfectly portrays Ness's moral struggle as he descends the stairs whilst the criminals ascend. Robert de Niro walks through his performance as Capone with ease (although maybe a little too over the top). Connery's support as the friend and initially reluctant teacher is excellent, but it is Costner's breakthrough role which really stands out here. The script is flawed in parts, but gets its message across well and the creepily eerie music by Ennio Morricone describes the mood extremely to a tee. I believe a lot of the facts of the situation were skewed to 'Hollywood' up the story.(i.e to make it more accessible and exciting for the cinema goer). A definite must see.

I guess you mean the film not the caste in Hinduism.
I like the film a lot, it is a well made film that tells a simple story well. It's pretty true to history (which is always nice in a period film) and it has a good cast. I thought Sean Connery was very good in it. Overall I would say about 7.5 out of 10.
It's a good film to see with friends but not really a film to watch at a party!

the DePalma version was very entertaining, Sean Connery was nominated for an award for that role...the slow motion scene with Andy Garcia as the shooter in the train station was very cool...you almost want to reach in the screen and choke the character that plays Frank Nitti...DeNiro, and Costner were good as always...
