The correct one is of course ON the chair because 'on' is the preposition that means to the up of something.While 'in' is the preposition that reffers to the content of a thing.As per english grammar ON the chair is appropriate.

Sitting in a chair means your inside of it wich isnt possible and Sitting on a chair meaning your on top off it so sitting on a chair sounds right

I would think you sit ON a chair without arm rests, but IN a chair with armrests because it is enclosing you.
