It was packed up in the side of the LEM and they used straps to pull it down when they were ready to use it.

The wheels were folded up as were some of the instruments to ensure that it fitted.

I realise that Woosher has a picture of Douglas Adams as his Avatar but his explanaion is correct. I find it hugely annoying that people [like my dad] say, where was the rover stored?

It fitted into a spce not much larger than a suitcase. It's deployment requires simply the pulling of a deployment strap and it unravelled perfectly. That is was so compact really is a miracle.
