Legally the answer is yes, though I wonder if the Sears installers are? So if they are then yes I would say so, but as with the other answerer I say if it is not on the main side and you have two pipe wrenches, pipe dope, leak detector and a modicum of intelligence do it yourself.

If the Plumber who answered actually paid to have some one else do it in his own home is telling the truth I would say he was a over cautious ninny as he deals with the stuff regularly in his trade and should be more than qualified.

I am a HVAC apprentice and my Boss a Contractor and as far as I know he is not Corgi or anything else and we run gas pipe quite often. In fact we just ran eight drops from a two inch line down to 1/2 inch for dryers.

I also ask if it were illegal for you to run your own gas why is there black pipe at ACE, Home Depot, Lowe's, and almost every other "handyman's" store?

Yep. I work for Powergen, arranging new meters, and our engineers won't work on a site unless the gas installations been done by a Corgi engineer, and the electrics by an NICEIC engineer. It's best to get it done by a registered contractor.

YES YES YES. It is illegal for anyone else to install a gas appliance of any sort. Imagine the consequences if a mistake was made. End of discussion.
