I used to work for a competitor to B & Q, and like another answerer said stores are often run to a bare minimum with only one or two people who are knowledgeable enough to be able to advise you on what ever department you happen to need help in.
so remember if you need assistance all you need to do is go to the customer service desk or checkouts wher they should be able to call the right person to provide enough help to you. if the department staff can't help then ask for the duty manager or manager (depending on the time of your visit). you may need to wait a few minutes for the employee to come and help you. just be patient and wait near the service desk/ checkout if after three to five minutes you are still waiting ask for another call to be put out.
failing that grab any high value item that should be security tagged and walk it through the checkout sensors to set off the alarms and get the staff running (security and management at least). be sure to come straigh back in or you could end up being charged for shop lifting/attempted theft this option is a last resort and should only be done when you have been waiting more than fifteen minutes.
as for someone saying they will get someone, they may still be looking for the right person rather than put a call out on the PA system. if you ask someone for help in a store you are best advised to remain in the aisle where you asked for help, so you can easily be found. though you may like to ask for a chair to be got while you wait.

good luck and remember other DIY stores are available so if B & Q are failing to help then shop else where. Remember to fill in a complaint/ service/comments form if available and back that up with a letter to the manager of your local store and also a letter to head office.

Yes, but on the whole they are a good bunch, especially as they have a policy of employing older people. Sometimes these men and women have had a lifetimes experience in plumbing or decorating or some other trade and they are ready to share this with customers.
Also they have to cover huge distances in these stores on foot-maybe they should have little buggies!

I own a small DIY store in the UK. I am dedicated to filling my customers needs. Keep them happy and they will come back. Service and advice is paramount, experience and stock knowledge is essential!. Now, if you have all this, why work for a company only interested in world domination for its stockholders.? The staff are shelf fillers just trying to do their 9 to 5 and go home. Go to your Local store where they want to see you.

Staff in B & Q used to be helpful and knowledgeable some years ago. I'm afraid they've gone the same way as other companies. Too many bosses and staff with a couldn't care less attitude toward the public. I wonder if they want our money or not.

Because they, like many large stores are running on the bare minimum of staff. The ones that are there fall in to three catagories.
The ones on the till.
The ones out the back.
The ones trying to look busy to their boss but puttting their main efforts into avoiding the public.

go to a local hardware/ironmongers or builders yard instead of b and q. for a start b and q sell over-priced junk, their staff know f all about the stuff they are supposed to be experts on (c'mon is a professional joiner going to be working in the decking and patio department in b and q for minimum wage?). i once went into b and q and asked the staff on the tools counter for a 2lb ball pein hammer and he just stared at me blankly untill i pointed it out to him.

No...down here, they are in your face all the time...it is annoying to constantly hear..."can I help you"...."or how are you today"...it is their way of beginning the ..hard sell....when all the while you truly are...just window shopping...just having a look around and not really wanting to buy.....very rarely here can you walk into a shop and this not happen...unless it is...KMart....then you have to wait till the cows come home, before you even set eyes upon that rare species called....a team member......haha......happy window shopping up there............

If you think B&Q is bad, Focus is worse. All these stores hire staff at the lowest possible wage. They are not paid to be either intelligent or interested. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!!

I went into B & Q the other day and some guy at the entrance said "Do you want decking?" Well, I got the first punch in, so there.
