For a pretty contemporary guy, I'd offer Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Take the whole band, for that matter, especially John Frusciante, the guitarist. The guy nearly died from heroin addiction, and is back in the band now after cleaning up. These guys reinvent themselves on every album, and keep turning out amazing music, especially Kiedis. The recently released double album is a near-masterpiece.

I think it's safe to say that if Kiedis and the rest of RHCP had stayed on heroin, they wouldn't have been alive to elevate their art to its current level.
