My gas meter has gone hay-wire lately , so I phoned British Gas and they told me to do certain things whiich I did , but it still isn't working right: I've tried to explain to them but all I get is the same instructions followed up by that will sort it out. It has not but each time I phone it is like I'm talking to an automated machine and can't get any sence out of them. My question is , dose any one know a number that I can call to speak to some-one with a bit of savvy? or a certain department where people know what is what and will actually listen to what I 've got to say and help to sort it out. A free phone number would be gr8 but any number will do; as I just want to speak to some-one who has more than 1 brain cell.

British Gas is too big a company to deal with customer complaints. If they annoy one customer there are plenty of others out there to take their place, even though their customer numbers are shrinking they still have that same attitude.

I found writing to the Chairman a couple of times did get me the service I wanted. They weren't very happy about it either which was a bonus.

In my experience, you need to think about changing suppliers.
On the subject of the meter, it does not belong to the fuel supplier (in this case British Gas), but to the company that supplies them with meters. Here it is Siemens.
Contact British Gas, and ask them for an appointment for the meter supplier to come and sort out the meter, as you think there is a problem with it. Once you have sorted the probs, and had the meters read, I would change supplier.
If B.G. was the last company on the planet supplying fuel of any sort, I would rather freeze to death. Seriously.

You should ask for a home visit as you feel your problem is not being sorted. Ask to speak to a superior person other than a customer service advisor. If no joy, write to them, send it recorded delivery. If still no joy ask for their complaints procedure. Do That. Then if no joy complain to the ombudsman. Good luck. B Gas are notorious for being unhelpful, but manic if you owe them money.

British Gas do not have customer service, they have customer annoyance/aggravation. I've had more problems with them than i've had haircuts. (Don't get me started about them all over again....) Anyway, i suggest ringing them and asking to speak to a man called Michael Mooney who is the customer relations man. I'm not saying you'll get any joy and he is one of the most patronising and irritating people i've ever had the misfortune to have to speak to, but just knowing someone's name might help.
Failing that, ring energy watch and report them.

They are totally incompetent. Doesn't matter which department you speak to. We had to write a letter of complaint to the ombudsman to get them to move off their backsides.

The 'Service' part is a misnomer, as you've discovered.
