Does ex mean someone who was interested in you and wanted to marry or is it one whom you had physical relations with?

To put it simply an ex is someone that has been X'd out of your life. Examples are ex boyfriend, ex lover, ex mother-n-law, and ex friend. It is a short way to say no longer there.

In the LGBT community, the term ex can mean one of two things:
1. Ex - a previous partner whom you had a relationship with. Same as in the heterosexual community e.g. ex-wife, ex-boyfriend.
2. Ex-gay - a person who claims they're no longer gay (normally the result of ministry or therapy). Very controversial claims in both LGBT circles and the scientific community.

"Ex" means out - so it's someone who is no longer whatever the 'ex' is attached to. An ex-boyfriend is someone who used to be considered a BF (however you define that) but isn't any more. An ex-husband is someone you used to be married to, but got divorced from. And so on.

well an ex- can mean ex husband ex wife you name it. It means you used to be in a relationship with that person.

It means "former".
Maybe the "ex" was a spouse, or a lover, or a friend, or a boss, or a roomate, classmate eyc. etc.
