In the sixties the Monkees were a way of life.
But although I have read a fair bit about them, I
haven't found out how Davy Jones, from Manchester, UK, got in with an otherwise all-American group from Los Angeles.
Any oldies or swats out there know the answer?

They created the show for him and then hired the others. Here's the scoop from davyjones.net:

Davy was born in Manchester, England on December 30, 1945. He began entertaining at 11 years old as Ena Sharples' grandson on the still-running ITV soap opera, Coronation Street. His performance was so memorable, theatrical agents sought him out as he was working as an apprentice jockey in Newmarket and took him to London where he portrayed Dickens' mischievous Artful Dodger in the West End production of Oliver! Later, at the age of 16, Davy found himself the toast of New York where he originated the Artful Dodger role on Broadway and was nominated for a Tony Award.

As a result, Davy was offered a contract with Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems Television, and The Monkees was created shortly after.

They weren't a real group; in other words, a record company advertised for what would be today "boy band" hopefuls, and thousands turned up.
they wanted talent, but they wanted quirkiness too. Mickey Dolenze had been a child actor; he starred in the series "Elephant Boy". Mike Nesmith was a singer and giutar player in his own right; now he's well know on the Country Rock scene; Peter Tork was also an actor and a musician; and Davy Jones was also making a name for himself in small part; he was, at the time, trying to break into the US. According to legend, all were interviewed for the new band. It's likely that Jones was chosen because of his Accent, with a view to appealling to the market accross the Atlantic.
I don't think he was a great singer or musician; the others were - he looked good, that's all. He actually briefly trained as a jockey, by the way.
Mike Nesmith's trademark woolly hat was also an affectation dremaed up by the advertising moguls.
Mickey Dolenze could actually sing; he was, and still is, a multi-talented guy.
I worshipped them in the sixties. I wore a woolly hat like Mikes;
I knew all the words of all the songs.
there are episodes of the Monkees still playing on various sat. channels, and I still enjoy them though from a completely point of view.
God, we were so innocent!

He happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think that they were a 'manufactured' group, and it was also chic to have an English accent, cos of the Beatles etc....
Hope this helps...............
