I watched a debate on TV with two men (one black, one white) who were arguing about reparations for slavery. The black man thought African-Americans should be compensated for time and work they unvoluntarily put into the country when they were held as slaves, and the white man disagreed.
What's your take?

I think the opinions for the issue are fairly unanimous.

My great-great-great grandfather kept slaves. Your great-great-great grandfather might have been one. And it has nothing to do with you and me. In fact, my great-great-great grandmother (different branch) was a member of the Sioux tribe, so does that mean I get South Dakota back?

It's not the job of our generation to repair the wrongs done a century ago. Our goal should be to make sure they never happen again, and to work towards equal treatment and equal justice under current law. The past is the past - study it, learn from it, move on to a better future.

i do no longer think of that reparations could nonetheless be being exceeded out to the descendants of slaves. via now the people who could be receiving the money are a minimum of two or 3 generations removed from the guy who became into relatively a slave. If the ex-slave, baby, or perhaps grandchild have been those receiving it, i would not have an argument because of the fact it may be nicely deserved funds. those people could all have been straight away effected via slavery. i do no longer think that folk now a days are nonetheless straight away effected via the slavery that befell, and as such should not be getting paid for the suffering of their ancestors. i think of the money could greater valuable be spent via construction a monument to bear in mind what people went via or utilising it to end cutting-area slavery, if people opt to spend the money. yet, i do no longer think of that's justifiable to offer it out in reparations whilst our united states is in lots debt as that's.

Go for it...for anyone that WAS a slave.

Often I find those that support something like this are lazy and they want to get something for nothing THEY did. They want a silver plater off the work SOMEONE else did!

I would not expect to get paid for anything my grandparents did.

If we go for reparations what next? Will we be punished for a crime our great grandparents may have done?

Tony Evans said it well when he said that none of you were slaves so get over it.

Actually almost anyone could find someone in their family tree that was a slave. Remember the serfs in the middle ages were essentially slaves too.

More important....many of you are slaves right now but do not realize it. Read the link below

I certainly don't owe black Americans anything except respect as human beings. I was not born until 1958 so I am not responsible for anything that happened prior to that.

I think that anyone who can prove that he or she was a slave in this country should be paid reparations. Offspring should not be eligible as they have been paid for their work.

I think that its time to let the past stay in the past. Bad things have happened to everyones ancestors at one time or another. There comes a point when you have to let it go or its going to destroy you. Especially if it didn't happen to YOU but to generations before you even were thought of.

I think that there never will be reparations to the black community. It is what it was History.

I think it is a legitiment request, to be paid for the "work" and torture compensation. Unfortunately, are any of these slaves still alive? I really don't know. Should their families, be compensated?
Yes. Those people were never paid, their families do deserve to be. Unfortunately, our government will never so it.....

either we have all retroactive laws or none like maybe we should give the land back to the native Americans etc. its called double jeopardy if you make someone pay for a crime that was committed before it was against the law... right?!
