A brand--in and of itself--is meaningless.

However, a brand will develop a reputation the longer it is in the public eye.

This can be a good thing (as with Gillette Razors) or a bad thing (such as The Exxon Corporation following the Valdez oil disaster and record profits while gas prices hit record highs).

The ultimate goal of any brand is to become iconic; to have the brand name instantly associated with a certain product, even to the exclusion of other product brands.

Examples:

Jello

Band-aid

Moon-Pie

K-Y Jelly

or, single names:

Elvis

Cher

Madonna

Sinatra

So, in my life, when I have deemed a brand as iconic (like an icon) then I decide if I am connected to that icon.

For instance, Gillette will always be my brand of razor, largely because they advertized on all the Saturday Game of The Week Baseball Games on TV when I was a kid, and they also sponsored the Friday Night Fights from Madison Square Garden.

I watched both of these shows every week with my father, so the subconcious connection between the bonding with Dad and watching the Gillette parrot has branded this brand into my mind.

On the other hand, Ralph Lauren POLO clothing is SO overpriced just because there is a stupid guy on a horse with a stick sewn onto the cloth.

I have actually started to bypass the part in my catalogue where all of the Polo items are shown, because I just can't stand to associate myself with such a meaningless icon of yuppie consumer lemmings....

Hope that helps...

Branding helps helps an individual to categorize and to put things into perspective.

This is a natural human trait i.e. Me or us and anyone else who is not

Branding and categorizing others is determined by their attributes. i.e. male - female, rich - poor, race or religion

Being a member of a brand, group or organization can give a sense of belonging and even purpose in life as it does for me:

- in my job
-social clubs
-sports clubs
-in chuch
-as a parent
-as an individual
-as a part of the human race

Being branded negatively or in a wrong category however can be detrimental to a person or the person doing the branding i.e. Racism and Racial hatred.

Other brands include personal preference
