Decater Staleys.

Just like the Green Bay Packers were originally sponsored by the Acme Meat Packing Co. in Green Bay (no lie....Acme!), the Bears were originally located in Decater, IL and owned by the Decater Staley Motor Co. (the Staley Co. was one of hundreds of automakers of the time prior to being gobbled up and/or put out of business by the "Big Boys").

"Papa Bear" George Halas bought the Staleys and moved them to Chicago. He named them the Bears in honor of the Chicago Cubs. (And thus the joke in the 1970's on "The Big 89 - WLS " ---"What do you think of the Chicago Cubs?" "Maybe someday they'll grow up to be Bears and lose all over again" . Sorry. Couldn't resist).

The Bears "C" logo, by the way, was taken from the Carroll (WI) College "C" (Just like the Georgia "G" was taken from the Green Bay Packers in the 60's when Vince Dooley of UGA asked Vince Lombardi if he could use it...obviously prior to the days of big $$$$ and marketting....))

How'd ya like THAT history lesson!!!
