The main use of solar energy is in keeping our planet warm and allowing plants to grow by the process of photosynthesis.

If you are talking about electricity production from photovoltaic cells this is not really economic (at present) except in isolated areas where the cost of transmission lines is high and amounts are small. It obviates the need for say a diesel generator with associated fuel transportation and maintenance costs. They have been used for example together with batteries to power remote telephone boxes or to supply power for lighting a house.

Although the economics are against photovoltaic cells when put on roofs in suburban districts people who do this must be given credit for eliminating some of their carbon emissions. It may be that we will all have to start chosing other than the cheapest solution to our energy needs if we are to bring down carbon emissions significantly.

Solar energy is free. Sure, there is an initial capital cost to install a system that will convert the electromagnetic energy and photons sent out by the sun into electricity, but once you have made the investment and the sun keeps shining you will be producing electricity. No one will be sending you a bill for sunshine. Since solar panels consume no fuel and have no moving parts to wear out, there are no air, oil, or fuel filters to change. Simply keep the surface of the panels clean. One of the greatest advantages of solar energy, of course, is that there are no carbon dioxide, methane or other emissions that warm the atmosphere. However, manufacturing, transporting and installation of solar panels are necessarily accompanied by some of those emissions.

Well, the first application would have to be the calculator. Then, in countries like Malaysia they are used to heat up water. The water heater would function with electricity as well but it would work in the day with its solar panel on the roof of the house. Back in 2 or 3 years ago, they would have made a public phone in Langkawi using the same kind of energy resource. They are also making Formula 1 racing cars which will work with solar.

I hope this helps. :)
