I understand photographing a celebrity in a public place, but when it comes to following or chasing them, don't you think laws should be put in place to protect them? Just look at what happened to Lady Di, why hasn't something been done about this?

The term "paparazzi" started from the name of a character in the 1960 movie "La Dolce Vita" ("The Sweet Life") by Federico Fellini. Walter Santesso played the character Paparazzo. Photographers have been chasing after celebrities much longer -- star, celebrity, gossip, and scandal magazines have been around probably since the beginning of movies and theater before that. The First Amendment makes it hard for famous people to keep photographers away. If there's the chance for a sensational picture, the paparazzi will swarm.

Alot of people say that they do not deserve the right to privacy b/c they put themselves out into the public eye.I feel they deserve the same right to privacy as anyone does. The in your face paparazzi are getting out of hand, and feel they can do what they want to get the pictures. The right to privacy is a constitutional right.I do not think any of us would want someone to snap pictures of us in our normal lives.Besides the pictures, they make up stories just to get money.I personally would be very upset if someone made stories about me.I do not blame the celebrities that retaliate against the paparazzi. If someone was so aggressive and pushing and shoving at me to get a picture,I would probably whack them good.I agree with you about Princess Dianna, but I believe their was an underlying cause of death in that situation. My opinion is that she was pregnant with Dodi AlFyed's baby and that is was she was killed.Reports have surfaced backing the fact that she was pregnant.BUT no one deserves to be hounded by the press. At least the president has alot of body guards around him to save him from the fate of the paparazzi. I do believe there needs to be some laws implemented so that the papparazi would be fined or jailed for chasing the celebrities.I mean,if I were to say "chase" someone,I would probably be arrested and i think the papparazi should adhere to the same laws as us.The scary thing is,I saw a program the other night on tv about the people in the papparazi. They pinpointed numerous photographers who were actually registered sex offenders, and child molsesters. Some had served sentences for assualt, and the list goes on.

If so called celebrities behaved with dignity in public places their value to the paparazzi would be reduced to zero and they would be left alone. However I feel they should be able to expect privacy when on private property and this could be achieved by making it very easy for them to sue any publication publishing items in that situation.
As for the Lady Di situation. Wasn't there some concern about the ability of the driver, the illegal speed and the lack of seat belts?

Well, in principal I agree with you. But in reality...I don't see it happening. The reason they get chased for the odd exclusive photo is that the public will buy it. So, a picture like that brings a lot of money.

Yes, laws would be of use, but the real thing that needs to happen (and won't) is that people have to stop caring what celebrities are doing in their private life. They have to stop buying the magazines and tabloids.

Yes, they contributed to the death of Princess Diana. So they should be kept from pursuing them in that manner.
