A very good question! Did religion give birth to philosophy or did philosophy precede religion? I think religion came first because people always worshipped God (or gods or whatever works for them -- some concept of a benevolent Creator) even before they started navel-gazing and contemplating the meaning of life & all things. I didn't take philosophy (I always regretted that but I didn't have room for it when I was in university -- already taking english, drama, art, psychology, sociology) but I believe that it started in Greece (?) ok well I shouldn't guess. But in any event I'm pretty sure that people believed in God (or gods) before they started thinking philosophically...or maybe they co-existed from the beginning...

Religion. Philosophy is meant to explain some facts and religion is a fact. It appeared and then came philosophy to explain it.

Philosophy... because it was there the instant man asked his first philosophic question. Some answers he got were religious, and that is when religion came... but philosophy was already there in the asking of the question.

Philosophers' philosophical ideas are usually sparked or at least influenced by their religious beliefs. So religion.
