1. Show them the sites that are on the itinerary.

2. Help out with any problems that arise (lost luggage or passports, emergency at home, etc.).

3. Help with entering sites; usually the tourists have already paid the fee for the entrance and the guide pays and then gets the tickets.

4. Helping with any problems in the hotels or restaurants. Once in France we had several rooms with burnt out light bulbs. It was nuts. When we asked the manager for bulbs (we were even willing to change them ourselves) he said no. Some bathrooms were pitch black. The tour guide took care of it; she knew the language better than us and she had the clout of her company to back her up. If we were made to stay in the dark then that company would no longer use that hotel. He got bulbs for us.
