If you are healthy and there is no underlying chemical or medical condition prohibiting you from burning fat - You MUST consume fewer calories than you burn. That's it, that's the big secret.
If you are looking for the best diet, the best diet would be the one that directly addresses the reason you have a high BMI and you are most comfortable with to turn into a lifestyle NOT a diet.
Good luck, HTH

In my opinion there are two things that significantly helped me to reduce to reduce weight:
1. eat a great breakfast and skip dinner, after 6 o'clock pm you will eat only fruits or dring water or tea. Drink a minimum of 2 liters of water per day.
2. check for your nearest spa (www.infospa.org) and buy a membership there. Do body wrapping, hot water jets and especially a lot of swim.

And afterwards tell me the results, you will be amazed of the efficency. Mark my words.

Walk outdoors every day, increasing the length of the walk as you go along.

Check out Yoga and aerobics. You might find both on TV in the early AM. Watch them, then try the most simple of the exercises. You can also take out books on exercise from the library.

DON'T EAT:
-fast-food
-fried food
-junk food
-whole milk
-sugary cereal
-bacon, sausage, pepperoni, salami, bologna, hot dogs, etc. (these are full of preservatives, fat, calories, but are of no nutritional value)
-don't eat more than the recommended portion size of lean meat, or starches (potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, etc.)
-mayonnaise (full of eggs and oil)
-soda (a whole lot of empty calories)

DO eat:

Lots of fruits and veggies
Healthy cereal with low-fat milk
broiled fish
plain tuna (with just a bit of lemon)
non-fat yogurt
a baked potato (no butter or sour cream)

It's best to eat six mini-meals per day, rather than three large ones. This way you won't be hungry for long--and, your stomach will get accustomed to consuming smaller amounts of food.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water. You can also drink herbal teas, broth/boullion, V8 juice, OJ, etc. Regular coffee and tea without sugar and cream has no calories--but you might want to cut down on caffeine.

Good luck with this--it helped me, and others I know :)

funnily enough, eat a balanced diet and exercise more, but DONT strop eating altogether, just change WHAT you eat. As long as 80% of your diet is healthy, the other 20% can be unhealthy.

p.s eating celery uses up more calories than the celery contains itself.
