What is the purpose of a trade deadline? Why not have it where trades can happen all the time? Serious answers only please!

To get the teams set for the run to the playoffs. If trades could happen during the playoffs, series's could be turned around mid-series because of a trade. Suppose a team was down 0-2 in the western conference finals. They could trade draft picks for a player of a team that was knocked out. That wouldn't really be fair. General managers should have their teams set before the playoffs.

to keep players from joining a team right before playoffs to try to stack the team...
