Waves are slowed down when approaching a bay, but not headland, as the sea bed gradually rises in a bay. Also, it is easier to get to a safe area (it's quite hard to climb up headland!).

Waves and undercurrents, both of which are a bigger issue near the shore.

Sharks maybe. I wouldn't swim in any ocean. I watch shark week every year and all it does is scare me.
