Eventhough I wouldn't agree with ovcichka ( :p ) ,in balkans, religion is pretty much mixed up with politics.Unfortunately, here in Greece many priests and our Archbishop(the leader of Greek-Othrodox church who is reporting directly to the ecumenical Patriarchy of Constatinople) is giving speaches commenting politics quite often, usually about topics that are related to the church though.Monks are a different story. Most of them are isolated in their monasteries.

The monks here have to learn a lot of things besides Buddhist Scripture. They can get online as we do.

Monks don't do public speech here regularlly as the priest in the church, unless they are invited or for a big buddhist ceremony.

Generally, nobody will think to ask the monks anything about history or politics here, but I'm sure they will tell you what they know, if you ask. --- China

Of course not! Monks do not participate in secular life, that's what preachers do (in Serbia at least). Even the Patriarch (our equivalent to Pope) does not speak of politics directly, but through moral stories
