what are you tallking about? the oldest stars in the universe are the first stars the universe began it's existence through(VERY simplistically put), so yes, they can't be older than the universe itself.. um who told you that?

I think the answer is 0 * 10 to the power -56 seconds between the big bang and the creation of the first star. If this star is still around it would be known as a primordial star. The universe started at the big bang so it was created just after the big bang, but such a small ammount of time that it is negligable. I think this is the right answer but the book I found this in is lost.

There was a discrepancy a while ago (10 years?) but now the ages of both make sense; 14 BY since the Big Bang and 12 BY for the oldest star.

At one time the margin of error in working out the ages of some stars in globular clusters gave them a maximum age older than the universe. Either the universe was older than we thought or the stars were younger - it turns out the stars were younger, though that was never really in doubt.

Logic would dictate they can't be, and I must assume you've been presented with misleading data if someone has suggested it to you.
The current projected age of the universe is 13.7 billion years (observation of redshift).
There may be some stars that are close to the age of the universe, but there would be none older than it.

They can't be, and it is impossible to say the true age of the universe as we can't see enough of it. All ages of stars, planets, etc. (including the universe) are only estimates.
