I was just watching a show and htis bar got shut down for not having a dancing license were they making a joke or do you really need to have a license for people to dance in your night club/bar?

in new york you do. the former mayor made it harder for all of these clubs to stay open as a result. it's called a "cabaret license" and it's very difficult to get. so...you get shut down if you have music that is danceable and you advertise your bar as a "club"

It depends upon the local and state laws most places in the us its called an entertainment license it allows you to play music to groups over a certain number and allows them to dance.
