How did the stereotype of Asian women being compliant and domesticated come about? I am of Chinese and Canadian descent and I think that it is definitely not true. In actuality, the Asian women in my family are totally opposite from the submissive type; they are the ones that have the most control in their families.
It sort of upsets me that this common misconception is prevalent and quickly becoming a "fact". I also find it somewhat offensive because i consider myself to be a smart and independent woman that represents my race well. I certainly would not be content with men treating me with less respect because of this image portraying Asian women as subdued, and, in some cases, whorish. Do you think that this stereotype is misconstrued? Is the media perpetuating this faux pas?

First off there is nothing wrong with being a submissive woman. I think its a misconseption that you cannot be submissive and independent at the same time. I think a lot of Latina's (like myself) pride themselves in being submissive and knowing how to treat their men, yet by no means does this give the man the green light to not treat me like a queen in return.
I also lived in Asia for 2 years. Sorry to break it to you, but I saw where the stereo type came from. Women don't have say in much out there and are very traditional. A large portion of them stay home to handle the home and are enslaved to the men because they are the ones providing financially.
I think the "whorish" stereo type comes from the fact that although there are a lot more decent asian women then not, prostitution is huge around tourism at major cities because thats what poverty drives these girls to do. There is so much of it that thats part of Americans' memory of their trip to Asia.

This came about after WWll When GI's stationed in Japan started marrying Japanese women.

The media is right on it when it comes to Asian women.
Look how they sell themselves over the internet as modern day slaves.
