Neither.

The cherry tree story was made up by Washington's biographer, who claimed he heard it from some of Washington's relatives. However, Washington's relatives all refuted it.

In any event, if it did happen it would have been in 1742. The story was that Geroge had chopped down a sapling at his family home and was called up on it by his father (his father died in 1745).

The White House was not built until 1800, and Washington never lived in it (he died in 1799).

The legend is about George Washington though this never happened... and in the legend it wasn't at the White House- it was when he was a child and he was pruported to have said when asked if he cut down the tree "I'll never tell a lie, yes Father it was I."

But none of it ever really happened... it was a poem for children that turned into an urban legend.

George Washington, henceforth his famous line "I cannot tell a lie" when his father questioned what had happened to the cherry tree. But the funny thing is, I don't believe he did it at the White House.

The culprit was not president at the time and it was George Washington. The tree was in his childhood residence and he owned up to it when asked by his father who did it This led to GW having the reputation of being honest.

Neither, George didn't cut down a cherry tree at the White House.

None. That was a story told about George Washington supposedly doing it when he was a boy, but it didn't really happen.
