Why is anybody paying me to do this? Good question, astronomers. Other than giving us a basis for a decent time-keeping system, what have you done that is actually useful? It is interesting to know about distant galaxies, but, actually, so what? The history of the universe? If we knew it exactly, so what? Is Pluto a planet? So what? Given all the things that an intelligent person could do, why astronomy? Can't eat it, drive it, live in it, and the only people on the planet it directly benefits as far as I know are astronomers. Thousands of years ago when we crawled out of the caves we didn't know about black holes. Now we do. So what?

In response to Zorch... Carl Sagan once said something to the effect that we are in essence the Universe observing itself. We are made up of the material created in stars, evolved over millions of years in to sentient beings that look back at the stars and wonder about their nature.
Why do we study the cosmos? It's human nature to wonder why and how. We want to know where we came from and the nature of our existence. Does knowing these things improve our life or give us the means to act as part of human society? No, but then just to exist is an empty way to live. There are many things in human culture that don't directly contribute to survival and coexisting with other people. Literature, music, internet chatrooms are all superfluous things that we don't need to survive and go on, but they enrich us and make us worth something.
Many people ask at one time or another the question of why they exist. Why are we here? It seems to me that by your description Zorch, that we are here just to be here. For most people that answer is insufficient, and for some people knowing the nature of "here", of existence itself is reason enough.

The astronomers are trying to find out for many decades about the mystery of black holes that absorb even light that pass near their mouths. I think it will be a mystery even after many years.
