It wasn't George Washington, and not in Washington; colonists had no idea how large the "new frontier" was outside of the 13 states. He may have been honest, but he certainly did not chop down a cherry tree. Sources are below.

George Washington did and so did I since they died. They will not grow well here. I cut down some apple trees and peach trees and some plum trees as well so i guess i am a bad girl! But i did not lie.
