America was designed to be a republic, not a ruler of other nations. An example to them, a "city on a hill." It has drifted into an empire, presuming to impose its will by power on others such as Iraq. How will it all end?
I fear that America will fall due to internal decadence. As Rome did. A symptom of decay is the flight into irrational mysticism, such as fundamentalist religious delusions. Domestic problems are neglected while resources are diverted to external adventures.
The American people are pacified and distracted by bread and circuses, in the form of cheap or free food and free entertainment (think Food Stamps and television). If Britney Spears shaves her head, this is treated as of it is significant, and Anna Nicole Smith is treated as if she mattered, America has lost its way and is in decay. And when it falls it will take Western Civilization with it.
What can we do? I will not go queitly into that dark night, but rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I couldn't agree more. America: It was a grand experiment, but it's dusk is fast approaching, unfortunately. And all the ignorant masses care about is stuffing their face with McDonald's while they watch NASCAR and American Idol on the big screen TV they bought from Wal-Mart. Their mantra? Consume, don't think, consume, don't think, consume... And meanwhile our "leaders" steer our once-great nation further off course. Sad...

America has not even reached Rome's status as empire - that you should be so lucky. The Roman empire lasted for several centuries not a few paltry decades and stretched over all the known world at its peak. Right now America is at the point where Julius Caesar walked in and turned Rome into a real force in the ancient world, a disillusioned republic that was so divided along partisan lines that nothing effective could be done. I think a more likely end to America will be when western States like Oregon, Washington, and California see that their interests are better pooled together than with the rest of the country, paving the way for more successions.

Hopefully, the forces of good, the people who care about others, both in the U.S. and the rest of the world, will win out this time, averting a catastrophe. Every person, every nation that is bigheaded, disdainful, that lords over others, that wreaks havoc on others will be humbled.
Think Japan, Germany, Russia, England, France...every nation that thinks they have the right to steal from others, to murder others, to dishonor, disrepect others, to force one's beliefs or culture on another, will be humbled...not 'may be' humbled... ***WILL BE HUMBLED***.
I, too, will not go quietly into that dark night, but will rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Side note: Oregon, Washington and California are not going to 'secede'...that is laughable. What may happen to them instead is spelled, t - s - u - n - a - m - i.
Think about the force of the water on your body when you try to dive, but do a belly flop instead. Once an asteroid struck in the Pacific that was so unthinkably large that it plunged through 12,500 feet of water—that's well over two miles(!)—created a giant crater on the ocean floor, and caused a 600-foot high tsunami! People living on the coastlines are ostriches, hiding their heads in the sand. What are you going to do when a tsunami alarm is going off, but the damn wave is 600 feet high? Some scientists think that we're overdue. :o

It has already ended in some ways. It is very divided. You are either.....
Dem or Rep...not just American
Legal or Ilegal...not just American
Rich or Poor
Christian or anything else...the later or terrorists
Very sad state of affairs. You are one or the other, not unified as a countryman.

All good questions. And since you quote Dylan Thomas, let me answer back with Langston Hughes:

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath--
America will be!
