It's a kind of lamp that has come to represent a whole lifestyle. If I'm not mistaken, a Tiffany lamp is an important part of the Arts and Crafts decor, and if you've seen one Tiffany lamp, you know what a Tiffany lamp looks like. They all look somewhat similar and it's a distinctive type of lamp. And you probably know what kind of decor it goes in.
The example I thought of when I saw your question was the Lava Lamp. *There's* a lamp that carries a whole lot of baggage -- it is the symbol of an era, and when you put it in your home, it's not just a light source, but a statement of who you are.

lamps are categorized based on where they sit, such as floor lamp, desk lamp, etc.
